P2

A very well done horror film.  One thing I'm always appreciative of is when a movie can work with very few sets, and very few actors.

P2 works with the single setting of a parking garage and 2 characters.  There are a couple side people here and there, but for the most part you only have 1 terrifying stalker to keep track of.

The movie does an amazing job at highlighting someone who just doesn't understand what's going wrong with the situation.  He continually asks "Why are you doing this?" while his victim tries to escape, clearly not realizing he's in the wrong.

Wonderful time, I heavily recommend it.

There's some times that I really enjoy horror with a comedy undertone (Dead Shack, Cabin In The Woods), but then there's times I don't like it as much.  This would be one of those examples.

There were moments where I thought this would be a serious movie, but after the first 8 minutes I kinda killed that vibe.

The movie works, but you need to walk into it knowing it's a joke film.

This movie is everything I want out of a home invasion movie.  It has violence, a lot of victims, and an actually competent cast of characters.  Well, one of them is at least.

You get believable weird family dynamics too.  From the brothers Crispian and Drake arguing about who's the better man to the  daughter Aimee saying "You never give me credit for anything (spoiler)", you get the idea that none of these people  really care about each other.

There's a couple good jumps to the movie, but more importantly the death moments are very intense.  The whole thing brings a light in the dark feeling with how one of the characters really helps rally the family and get to that happy ending we all know comes from every horror movie.

No joke though, it's a pretty brutal movie, don't watch if you aren't ready for some blood.

Bedeviled

Bedeviled+2016.jpg

Let's get this out of the way right now, this is an awful movie.  The whole thing is basically a really bad interpretation of Nightmare on Elm Street, and it's really not worth your time to watch, like, at all.

However, it is pretty fun to watch when you have a good commentary track to run parallel to it!  A horror based YouTuber called Dead Meat did a commentary to listen to while watching this burning trash heap of a movie.  It 100% makes it better, honestly.  Bearable at least

Please don't waste your time watching this seriously though.  It's a good movie to riff on, but that's literally all.

10 Cloverfield Lane

It took me long enough, buy I finally watched 10 Cloverfield Lane.

I'm so happy with how this movie progressed.  They didn't answer every question that they could have, and I think that lent itself to the story.

The whole thing highlights the dread of what if the world ends and you have no idea who you're trapped with.  The whole thing is an exercise of suspense that John Goodman pulls off beautifully.  I had no idea what all my expectations were based off of, but it lived up to almost all of them.

It even ended well, so there's that.

Creep

This movie was horrifically tense.  I loved the pacing of the whole movie, and it was one of the few movies to give me a genuine sense of unease the entire time.

I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll hit minimal points.

The whole thing is shot in the found footage format.  Usually, I don't like that, but this one really worked well.

Secondly, you never know throughout the movie exactly how it'll end.  That made it really great in my opinion.

The only bad part is that it relied a little heavily on jumpscares for it's scare moments.

Blood Glacier

When I first saw the title of this movie, I could only think about the show Metalocalypse, and the movie that Dethklok made called "Blood Ocean"  Good lord what a disaster of an episode, so good.

The entire movie that is Blood Glacier is the same kind of rolling disaster.  First, you're going to have to read subtitles.  That's not a bad thing, it's just all in German.

Secondly the concept is so overblown.  There's a virus hidden in a glacier that looks like blood, and it has some crazy genetic stuff go on.

I feel like they were trying to create a new version of The Thing, but they kinda missed the mark.  This hits very heavily on the low B tier of horror though, but that's not to say it's not worth the watch.  Grab a drink and a friend to trash it with and have a great time.

He Never Died

I love movies with black humor, and this movie has loads of it.

It follows the story of a mysterious man who, quite frankly, seems to be a little slow.  As it goes on though you quickly will realize why that is.

It's a fun story though.  You get a nifty idea of what it might be like for an immortal being who was stuck on earth.  They work in a lot of cool little historical stuff to connect the dude to.

I 100% advise you watch this.  There's some violence and such but it's so funny, just such a good time.

It Follows

movieposter.jpg

I had avoided this movie because I really didn't think it was going to be too great.  The Netflix description was just something about "a monster that can only be passed on with sex" which sounded like a really trashy movie.

Turns out the concept of what is essentially an STD monster is actually super tense.  The gist of it is the monster can only walk, it never moves faster than a walk.  It also only tracks a single person at a time, though if it gets you it works back in the line of intercourse.

There is nudity in this movie (surprise?), but it's never featured sexually.  You really get a super uncomfortable rapey vibe from the monster, it's not a good time at all.

I recommend watching it if you're a fan of stalker type horror movies.

The Exorcism Of Emily Rose

I've only recently started watching exorcism movies.  Possession is one of those things that really spooks me a little, so I've mostly avoided it.

This movie had a cool twist though, in the sense that it presented the whole thing in a courtroom setting.  The girl who was being exorcised died, and now the priest is on trial for criminal negligence.

I loved the way everything in this movie was portrayed.  The story was shot differently depending on which lawyer was talking, and even though it was a "based on a true story" type of thing it didn't come off as super unrealistic.

Well worth a watch.

Let Me In

When I chose a movie to watch, I generally know absolutely nothing about it and have no expectations.

Starting this one, I had assumed it was a haunting movie or something based on what the Netflix cover art looked like.  I was pleasantly surprised to find this was a movie that, not only wasn't about a haunting, but that contained some solid child acting.

Worth a watch, has some terrific moments in it for sure.

Be Afraid

For some reason it's taken me an absurdly long time to finish this movie.  I started it on a day I was really tired and fell asleep about 30 minutes in, and the amount of time it took for me to finally pick it back up is embarrassing.

Unfortunately it didn't exactly hold up for me.  The movie seemed like it would have a lot going for it, but it ended up not quite hitting me in any way.

The concept was really strong, but the acting ended up hurting the flow in a really bad way.

It's worth a watch, but I wouldn't make plans to watch it by itself.  Maybe in a string of movies.

A Quiet Place

I wasn't sure what to expect from a movie that appeared to have no dialogue.  I assumed that it would plod a little and that it might be harder to follow.  This was not the case.

The movie built a wonderful sense of dread the entire time, and had a scene right in the beginning that set a very decidedly dark tone to the rest of it.

Don't let the lack of dialogue make you think it wouldn't sound great either, they really let loose with the sound design of the whole thing.  Every sound that appeared in the movie was perfect.  From the walking on the sand paths to the rustling of trees, everything had its place.

I feel it's going to be an experience best seen in a theater, so if you're going to watch a movie, make it this one.

Dead Body

A rather enjoyable whodunit.  I had my suspicion locked in on who the killer was after the first kills occured, but it turns out I was wrong.

Honestly I don't know what's more fun, guessing right, or guessing wrong and getting the twist.

It's not the kind of twist ending that makes you mad though, it was actually rather well done.  Could have been better, but still a really fun movie to watch a second time to see what all you can catch after the reveal.

Dead Shack

I was pleasantly surprised when I watched this one.  It wasn't a movie that tried to be more than it was, it was just a fun time.  If you've watched Deathgasm or Cabin In The Woods then think of that kind of feeling when you watch this.

The dialogue between the characters (who were supposed to be like, 14), felt honestly really realistic.  I know a lot of people felt like it was too clunky, but I for sure know a lot of people who talk just like that, so it didn't bug me.

The story is about what you'd expect too, so once the movie gets going you really know what's going to happen.  Still fun though, I'd watch it again.

The Fog

The Fog.jpg

I only watched The Fog because I saw John Carpenter was attached to it.  On the whole, while I appreciate older horror flicks, they just don't get me all the time.  I feel like once the 90s hit, horror was able to take off a little better.  Not to say there's not good older horror movies, because they 100% exist.

Take this one.  While the sound effects kinda hurt my ears, I don't want to imply this movie was bad.  It simple suffered the fallbacks of many older films, aggressive sound design being one of them.

Solid fully fleshed story though, which is somethign older horror always lends you.

I'd been interesting in watching this film since it came out, I just never happened to get around to it.

I'm not the biggest fan of Rob Zombie's movies, but I can acknowledge his movies do what "good horror movies are supposed to do", they make me uncomfortable.

Well as usual, Rob managed to make a movie that made me really unhappy with how his people treated each other.  The main characters interacted in a human, believable way, so watching things happen to them as the movie went on was honestly saddening.  During the opening credits there's a lot of what looked like old film footage of them being friends and generally having fun, so you got to feel attached.

Let's be real though, it's Zombie, you know it's gonna be disturbing.  With that in mind, it's not his strongest release, but the violence and kills do make it worth your time.
